There are millions of membranes available, various materials, innumerable shapes and forms. Here, we give an overview of the most common modules.

Hollow Fiber Modules

Recommended for

Best for biotech

Hollow fiber modules are tubular devices containing fiber bundles. They are built similar to shell-and-tube heat exchangers. Feed flow is directed through the lumen side with the permeate withdrawn from the shell side. Hollow Fiber Modules are great for viscous streams, for streams with some solids. They can be backflushed, and show great tolerance for chemicals.

  • Easy to clean, not easily plugged (makes them suitable for applications with high solid concentration)
  • Hygienic
  • Polymer can be modified
  • Excellent in combination with Enzymes
  • Turbulent flow can be achieved if viscosity is not too high (Reynolds Number !)

Spiral Wound Modules

Best for water-like applications

Spiral wound modules are originally developed for water applications, where they are best suited. It's strange that they found their way into dairy applications, because their inner surface is anything that hygienic. But they are relatively cheap and fact is, they work. Spiral wound modules can't be used when particles and/or fibres are present in the liquid. In such cases, spiralwound modules are not an option since the flow channels would become blocked.

Ceramic Modules

For extreme cleaning and backflushing

Ceramic modules are available in various formats. Most often they are used as multichannel elements. However we have also installed systems with ceramic hollow fibers, or as ceramic foils, discs and plates. The benefits of ceramic membranes are their excellent tolerance to pH, chemicals and extreme temperatures. Ceramic elements are normally used in the in-to-out configuration (feed inside channels, permeate outside ceramic elements). If used as UF or MF it can be backflushed. Ceramic elements have typically lengths of 1...1.2 m. The flow channels are parallel in an element.

A standard in Bioprocessing

Cassettes are commonly used in DSP (downstream processing) of biopharmaceuticals. Very good for upscaling (Laboratory -> Small scale production).

Stirred Cells

Recommended for
Laboratory Pilot Industrial

Very useful to understand how membranes work !

Stirred cells use a cut flat-sheet membrane disk inserted at the bottom of pressurized reservoir vessel. A stir rests on top of the membrane an a controlled rotation provides a tangential flow field on its surface. The vessel is pressurized to provide a transmembrane pressure across the membrane disk.

Strong points

  • Works with a minimum volume of 200 ml, so not much feed is required.
  • Stirred cells have a nearly uniform mass transfer coefficient across the membrane surface. This uniformity is very helpful in removing polarization effects of modules.
  • Perfect tool for R&D.

To consider

  • Flux and rejection do not directly scale-up to larger commercial modules.
